Daves' Tips #3

How often should we conduct reviews?

Some companies look at reviews as a necessary evil that should be put off and avoided at all cost. Part of the reason for this is the perception that it should be done only once a year and then forgotten. This is a shame since this is the best time to "clear the air" and keep communication and momentum going in the entire company and each department.

The review should set the stage for a number of items:

  • a set of actions or training events that should take place in a given time frame
  • what the measurements of completion or success will be
  • what support or tools are needed
  • most importantly, the next follow up date!
This will set an ongoing review process in motion. At each meeting the expectation, support, time frame and measurement are set and then reviewed at the appointed time. When that step is completed a new focus is discussed, the pieces for completion are put in place and the next step is taken. It really is that easy.

With an ongoing review process in place, the formal review is nothing more than pleasant reflection on what has been accomplished and a time to look at broader perspectives. From this broader perspective come the objectives for the following time frame until the next formal review.
