When we are reviewed with a focus on our past behaviors that were lacking, then given no direction, guidance, or expectations, how anxious are we to continue to participate in this environment? On the other hand, when we are given the opportunity to improve our performance and have a supportive environment with guidelines and expectations, we enjoy this type of interaction immensely. This type of support and focus should be included in the review process and is easier to do than most managers think.
Each area should be broken down into manageable bites and then worked on one at a time with a list of desired outcomes, actions, resources, etc. as illustrated on the form below. This type of form can be used in almost any situation.
If there are specific skills and competencies that need to be addressed, one resource that we know to be useful is Learning Profiles. These are web-based tools that are used for self-evaluation, self and manager (180º feedback report) or self, manager, direct reports and peers (360º feedback report.) For more information, go to www.hiringsolutions.net, click on What's New and then click on Learning Profiles.
