Daves' Tips #6

How do we get the right people to respond to our "help wanted" ads?

Once you have created a job description, it is easy to pick out the skills and experience needed for the position you are advertising. Here are some ways to get people to respond to your ad and help to screen out unqualified applicants.

Ask people who are performing at a high level what they enjoy about working for your company; what keeps them excited about coming to work everyday. Get specific answers and use this information in your ads.

Use positive information about your company in the ad. If you have been in business for 20 years, let people know you are here for the long haul. If you are centrally located, close to a freeway, have flexible hours to avoid rush hour or you have a softball team; list anything you can think of that makes it fun and comfortable to work for your business.

When you have an entry-level position and you provide training, make sure you let people know. If the position requires specific skills, list these as requirements. Better to get fewer applicants that deserve your time and attention.

Make sure that you control the schedule. List specific contact dates and times and hold the applicants accountable to these periods. When accepting resumes by mail, fax or online, give specific cut-off times and dates.

Review your ads. They should:

  • sell your company
  • sell the position
  • reflect your company culture
  • list the skills and experience required
  • include salary range
For the finishing touches, seek advice from your advertising source about tips to make your ad stand out, maintain a professional appearance and catch the eye of as many qualified applicants as possible.
